Dental Treatment Plans FAQ

Dr. Matthew Rasmussen

Why am I getting two different treatment plans for the same issue?

Many dentists have different philosophies regarding how they would treat a particular case, and some may take a more conservative or proactive approach. Therefore, it's possible for dentists to come up with different treatment plans for the same patient. In some situations, there may be multiple reasonable ways to address a dental problem.

Some doctors tend to favor more conservative treatments. Sometimes this can be a good thing because they may recommend monitoring something rather than treating it immediately when treatment isn't yet necessary. On the other hand, being proactive about certain dental conditions can also be beneficial. We may be able to address a problem before it progresses and requires more extensive treatment.

A dentist's diagnosis and treatment planning also depend on the information available from the examination and appropriate diagnostic tools. Here at Periodontics and Implant Dentistry of Tallahassee, we have technology that includes 3D imaging and digital scanning when those tools are appropriate for the patient's individual situation.

When it comes to dental treatment, it's important to remember that it's not just the doctor in the room. The patient is also part of the decision-making process. We take the time to listen to the patient, understand their concerns and goals, and consider their long-term oral health when developing a treatment plan.

When you're evaluating two different dental treatment plans, ask what diagnosis each dentist has made, why each procedure is being recommended, what the goal of each treatment is, and what alternatives are available. You can also ask about the potential benefits, risks, and consequences of delaying or declining a particular treatment.

It's completely reasonable to bring an existing treatment plan to another dentist for a second opinion. Having that discussion can help you better understand the diagnosis and the available treatment options so that you and your dentist can make an informed decision together.

Every person is different. At Periodontics and Implant Dentistry of Tallahassee, we listen to our patients and consider their individual needs and goals regarding their oral healthcare. There are standards of care that guide diagnosis and disease management, but there may still be different appropriate treatment options depending on the individual situation.

How can you find a dentist you trust?

A common question that we get at Periodontics and Implant Dentistry of Tallahassee is, "How can you find a dentist you trust and feel comfortable discussing treatment recommendations with?" A referral from a friend, family member, physician, or another dental professional can be one place to start.

You can also learn about the dentist's education, experience, and approach to care and have a conversation with the doctor about their treatment philosophy. Ask what treatment they're recommending, why they're recommending it, what alternatives exist, and what you can expect if you choose not to proceed right away.

It's important to find a dentist who communicates clearly, answers your questions, and gives you the information you need to participate in decisions about your dental care.
