Common Dental Objections

Dr. Matthew Rasmussen

Is treatment too expensive?

A common concern that we hear about many dental treatments is that they're too expensive. There are a couple of things to keep in mind. First, when you're considering a larger treatment plan, it's important to understand what's included, why each procedure is being recommended, and what alternatives may be available.

At Periodontics and Implant Dentistry of Tallahassee, we take pride in the care we provide and want patients to understand both the treatment and the associated costs before moving forward. It's also reasonable to ask about the expected maintenance, potential future treatment, and long-term considerations associated with each option.

For many patients, paying for larger or more extensive treatment all at once can be difficult. We work with third-party financing options that may allow eligible patients to divide treatment costs into monthly payments. Financing terms, costs, and eligibility vary, so we'll explain the available options.

Am I too old for this treatment?

A common concern we get here at Periodontics and Implant Dentistry of Tallahassee is, "Am I too old for this treatment?" Age by itself doesn't necessarily determine whether someone is a candidate for dental treatment.

Instead, we look at factors such as your overall health, oral health, medications, healing ability, the procedure being considered, and your individual goals. Certain medical conditions or other risk factors may affect whether a particular treatment is appropriate.

If you're interested in treatment, we can evaluate your individual situation and discuss the potential benefits, risks, and alternatives with you.

What if I don't have time for treatment?

Another common concern that we hear regarding dental treatment is that some people are very busy, particularly people with young families or demanding professional schedules, and they don't have a lot of time to commit to treatment. We definitely understand that.

At Periodontics and Implant Dentistry of Tallahassee, we try to make appointments efficient and work with patients to find scheduling options that fit their needs when possible. Before treatment begins, we'll also explain how many appointments may be involved and what you can expect from the overall timeline.

Should I talk to my spouse before committing to treatment?

A common concern that we hear is that a patient wants to talk to their spouse or another family member before committing to treatment. We absolutely understand that, particularly when you're considering a significant treatment plan.

We want you to have the information you need to make your decision. If you would like your spouse or another person involved in the discussion, you're welcome to include them with your permission. They may be able to join the conversation in person or by phone so we can answer questions about the recommended treatment, alternatives, expected costs, and other considerations.

The decision about whether to move forward with treatment ultimately belongs to you.

If it doesn't hurt, is it still a problem?

One of the most common things that we hear is, "If it doesn't hurt, then it's not an issue." Unfortunately, in dentistry, and particularly in periodontics, some conditions can develop without causing noticeable pain.

Gum disease, for example, may progress without significant discomfort, particularly in its earlier stages. Cavities and other dental problems may also be present before you notice obvious symptoms.

Please don't use the absence of pain as the only sign that your teeth and gums are healthy. Dental examinations, periodontal measurements, appropriate X-rays, and other diagnostic information can help us identify problems that you may not be able to feel on your own.

If we identify an area of concern, we'll explain what we've found, whether treatment is needed, what alternatives may be available, and what could happen if the condition is monitored rather than treated immediately.
